My poem: Rapids

Rapids LI: To identify the rhyme in the poem At the early day of spring Beyond forest where nightingale will sing Beyond castle of a ghost of forest king The great river started as a lively spring The river in tributaries grew Pushing it way through Carving canyons and valleys too So strong on very canvas of earth it drew But soon this awesome run turns into mild jog The river winds disappearing somewhere in a fog It turns into a large bog Barely strong enough to push a log The swamp is vital to ecology And it’s secretive and full of majesty But I miss river’s intensity On my soul it left enchantment and history I admire its beauty As I watch I feel something eerie And I think I hope to use that history To change the very momentum of chaos and biology Patrycjusz Kopec What language features can you identify in the poem? List examples of each language feature you identify. Rhyme: Spring, sing, king, grew, through, too, drew, jog, bog, log, fog, ecology, majesty, intensity, history, eerie, beauty, biology Verb: watch, think, sing, push, turn, miss Noun: swamp, forest, river, castle, soul Adverb: biology, history, beauty, ecology, majesty, intensity Highlight the rhyming words in yellow? Write out the dictionary meanings of: majesty: impressive statements, dignity or beauty intensity: the company of being intense. eerie: Strange and frightening Describe the journey of the rapids? The journey of the rapids first began on spring, it was flowing really fast and then in seconds, few minutes later it started to flow super slow because the wind wasn’t blowing anymore.

Using Te Ara 1

Using Te Ara -
The Encyclopedia of New Zealand
1. Waitemata Harbour

L.I. Develop our knowledge of Auckland and the Tamaki River.
Familiarise ourselves with an online NZ encyclopaedia.
Use our skimming and scanning skills.

Use this link to open Te Ara
Enter Waitemata into the search box and use that page to answer these questions.

What sort of landform is the Waitemata harbour?
It is a drowned River Valley. ✓

Why was it chosen to be New Zealand’s capital?
The harbour’s deep navigable channels and sheltered bays helped to determine Lieutenant-Governor Hobson’s choice of a site for New Zealand's capital in 1840.  ✓

Westhaven - Viaduct Basin The Viaduct Basin, site of the old fishing harbour, was redeveloped in the mid-1990s as a site where the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron could host the America’s Cup in 1999 and 2003.
Harbour bridge- The Auckland Harbour Bridge (1,020 m long) was opened in 1959 to link  the Auckland isthmus with the north.  ✓

BODMAS

Today in maths we learnt that the order you work out things in is important when you are solving equations. To help us remember the order we use BODMAS (brackets, other things division, multiplication, addition and subtraction). Sometimes you will see BODMAS written as BIDMAS or BEDMAS but they all mean the same thing.
The other things stands for  which are the square root and powers of.
I learnt to use these today.

Mt Tongariro Report

The Rise Of Mount Tongariro.

New Zealand's Mount Tongariro has roared back to life after 150 years asleep. Parts of the North Island spreading as far as Napier, Taupo and Wanganui have been covered with thick ash. Flights to Napier have been delayed and pilots have been told not to fly aeroplanes near Mt Tongariro because of the smoke.

I am standing in the town where Mount Tongariro has erupted. The people here said that they were so terrified they thought they were going to die. All they could hear was big crashing noises. Residents say their hearts were beating so fast they almost had heart attacks. Babies were crying, children were screaming, dog’s barking, cats hissing and many other animals making their terrified noises. Locals report that the eruption started around 11:50 pm, close to midnight.

Farmers are worried about their water and food supplies, as water and food for animals are covered in ash. Ponds and river seem to be covered in a thin layer of what appears to be paint. People were seeking shelter as lava and boulders came spurting out of the top of the  enormous giant.

Following last nights eruption, local people woke up to find the ground covered in a thick layers of ash. Flights have been cancelled, roads and tracks have been closed. people now face a big clean up after this eruption has taken place.

At first people did not heed the warnings and didn't take it seriously. Then at 11:50 PM on Monday 21 November, Mt Tongariro took everyone by surprise by unleashing ash, smoke and boulders towards houses, farming lands and ponds. People were regretting not taking the warning seriously. Volcanologists say that the eruption was just a one of event, worst case scenario is that this is the beginning of a bigger and terrible eruption.

People are not sure when the next eruption will take place. They have been told that if they are caught in ash fall, cover your face, seek shelter, protect eyes with goggles. Don’t wear contact lenses however if you need to make sure you wear goggles as well. We can’t stop mother nature but we can take steps to protect our eyesight.

Skip counting from any given number

I am cutting out numbers from a hundreds grid we had to stick them back in order, our learning Intention was to skip count from any given number. We had to glue the even numbers on one page of our book and the odd numbers on the other side, the patterns I noticed was they ended in 2, 7,2,7,2.
